Nepal adopts Nagoya Protocol

Kathmandu, Dec 29 (RSS): Nepal has decided to adopt the Nagoya Protocol on access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization to the convention on biological diversity. It is a supplementary agreement to the convention on biological diversity. It provides a transparent legal framework for the effective implementation of one of the three objectives of the CBD: the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources. According to Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN, New York, the letter signed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali in this regard has been handed over to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.
Earlier, the protocol was approved by the House of Representatives and National Assembly. Nepal is the 116th nation entering into the protocol. The protocol will enter into force after the ratification of 90 days.
